May Newsletter

Congratulations 4th graders on making it through the New York State Tests! Only more left! Science. This two part test will take place at the end of May and in early June.
In the reading workshop, we are reading in book clubs.  Students will continue to read and discuss books in small groups. Please help your child be prepared by reading the assignment and bringing the book back and forth to school.
We are starting our next social studies unit: Colonial America. We have a lot of fun activities and trips planned for this unit! At the end of May, we are going to the Colonial Dames’ Museum.
For our writing unit, students will be writing journal entries on a topic from the Colonial period. Each student will be assigned a topic that they will become an expert on and then write journal entries from the perspective of a person living in Colonial times.
In math, we are moving on from fractions and are now studying decimals. The information we learned during our fraction unit will give students a stronger understanding of decimals!
We have many fun and enriching programs that we are a part of at PS 51. Students are still having fun dancing with Toni in our TAP program. Our final TAP performance is on Friday, June 14th.  We are beginning our Story Pirates program on May 2nd. Through this program, students will learn to write creative pieces . Those pieces will then be turned into skits and performed by the Story Pirates actors.

4-402 Updates

Due to unprecedented and extreme weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy, school had been closed for Wednesday October 31st.  We hope you are safe and managing the storm without difficulty.

As a result, our field trip to Inwood Hill Park is cancelled.  We will reschedule this trip for another date and will keep you posted! Please check back here for further information.

As we have been out of school for a few days now, we ask students to keep up with their studies.  Please continue to read independent books, jot your reactions on post-its and record your reading in your log.  Try to read for, at least, 45 minutes daily.

For math, we are beginning our multiplication and division unit.  So, practice your basic multiplication facts. Check out websites like: www.coolmath4kids.com and www.mathplayground.com

Finally, write about your experiences and impressions about the hurricane.  You may also want to research hurricanes and other natural disasters online.  Remember to write in complete paragraphs and use end punctuation.

We will accept all homework when we return to school.  Please be aware that these are homework suggestions for the few days out from school.  This work is not mandatory but we will give extra credit for the work completed.

Please be safe and we look forward to seeing you soon in school!

4-401 Updates

4-401 Parents,

It has been announced that NYC public schools will not be in session tomorrow (Tuesday 10/30) due to the threat of Hurricane Sandy. I hope that you and your families are safe and well.

Since school will not be held tomorrow, I want to encourage you to have your children read for at least 1 hour (jotting their thinking as they read) and free write or complete their literary letter drafts for at least 45 minutes. Below are a few websites that your children can use to practice their multiplication facts. Of course, this work is not mandatory and the students will not be graded on any of it.

Stay safe!
