Email Article Once a year, each school is required to have a Safety Committee meeting open to parents. As in years past, we have decided to hold the Safety meeting at the beginning of the PTA meeting on Thursday, May 23rd at 8:30 a.m. at Hartley House. We hope you can attend since there are important safety issues that the Committee is working on based on our return to the west side in September. Hope to see you all there!

Email Article All New York State schools have been informed by the State Education Department that a new regulation about the use of communication devices is in effect as of the Spring 2013 state testing. I have quoted from the regulation below:
“Use of Communication Devices
All students are prohibited from bringing cell phones and certain other electronic devices…into a classroom or other location where a State test is being administered. Test proctors and school officials shall retain the right to collect and hold any prohibited electronic devices prior to the start of the test administration…"
At the beginning of each test session, proctors must read the following statement to all students taking State tests:
"You cannot have any communications device, including a cell phone, with you during this test or during any breaks (such as a restroom visit). Such devices include, but are not limited to:
• Cell phones
• Blackberry devices and other PDAs
• iPods and MP3 players
• iPads, tablets, and other eReaders
• Laptops, notebooks, or any other personal computing devices (including DS, PSP, etc)
• Camera or other photographic equipment
• Headphones, headsets, or in-ear headphones such as earbuds
• Any other device capable of recording audio, photographic or video content, or capable of viewing or playing back such content”
At PS 51, Ms. Sing-Bock and I have decided to collect all such devices before the test begins on each testing day. Students will place them in a plastic bag labeled with their names. The bags for each class will be locked in my room until the end of the day when classroom teachers will return the devices to their students.
Please feel free to send me an email if you have any questions about this new regulation at cmyersjusko@schools.nyc.gov or call me at 212-534-1627.
